The objects are elegant yet minimalistic and durable. She is striving for purity in every shape. Her inspiration comes from traditional Scandinavian craft and nature, and the simplicity of the Japanese aesthetic. She is now based in Malmö, Sweden, and has studied ceramics in Stockholm and Leksand. During her upbringing on a farm in the woodland of central Sweden, handicrafts and nature were always present. Nature works both as a source of inspiration and materials. Like the esteemed artist Agnes Martin who attained peace of mind in her rhythms of line, we can find calm on the surface of this piece.

Iva Polachova finds tranquil compositions referential of Brancusi’s wonderous carvings and elemental forms, exemplified here in this vessel shaped like a tear drop with a round spherical bottom lofting to a subtly elliptical opening.

This work is completely unique and sculptural but also water tight.

About the Artist

Iva Polachova is a ceramicist based in London specialising in fluid and tactile tableware and decorative vessels in a limited palette. Iva takes inspiration from Constantin Brancusi’s notion of the essential in art and Paul Klee’s belief that the artist distils from nature. She likes working with unglazed porcelain because of the strength that its sensuous and fragile appearance belies, but she also works with a variety of clays, from the refined to the coarse. Pieces are dipped in white matt or shiny glazes. The use of white is integral to Iva’s practice as it reveals the clay, whilst simultaneously covering it, and emphasizes the form and texture of her pieces. Her gently textured surfaces are created using simple ceramic tools, such as a scraper and rasp blades which are left visible to attest to their maker’s hand. Iva’s prioritization of the creative process and rhythm of making results in pieces that are imbued with a sense of balance, clarity and stillness.

Dimensions: ⌀ 13cm x H 2.5cm

Materials: Oak wood

Method: Hand turned and finished with Kuro-urushi, Sabi-urushi (outside) and Fuki-urushi (inside)

Care Instructions: Please note; this item is a natural product, please avoid storing in the sunlight and heat. Also unlike Ann’s other work the cuts of this piece are reassembled as seams, rather than overlapped, a process which Ann says takes far more time and patience, despite the resulting easy, seamless, crease effect.

Material: Stoneware

Method: Slabs reassembled into a vessel

Dimensions: H 16cm x L 21cm x W 16cm

Origin: Made in Belgium

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0233/5583/products/DSCF3737_27efd1b2-99a5-4812-8506-9330aa6acd2b.jpg?v=1664284495
annette-lindenberg-volcanic-splatters-tea-bowl-2
Annette Lindenberg 'Volcanic Splatters' Tea Bowl 2

Dimensions - W11cm x 8.5cm

Materials - Black clay with black glaze

Method - Hand sculpted, Kurinuki (the Japanese technique of hollowing solid clay)

Care - Non-functional, carefully wipe clean with a dry cloth

Description

The beautiful decorative tea bowl is finely handcrafted by artist Annette Lindenberg using kurinuki, the traditional Japanese technique of carving from a single block of clay.
