Description:
Soft carved lines contrast the smokey chalk like surface of this beautifully hand coiled moon. The organic, flowing form is accentuated by contrasting interior and exterior and unique surface pattern.
"Early on my endeavours to find ‘my’ form lead me to the sphere. My first coil pot was a large red sun made from terracotta. Many new forms have emanated from this original form since but I have always been drawn back to the sphere.
Our planet is burning but the moon in the sky seems calming and reassuring, nature is eternal. My white Moon is trying to express harmony, balance and serenity. In my work I’m trying to remind us of the beauty of nature, the need for balance and harmony."
About the Artist
Born in Lörrach, South Germany, Gabriele Koch studied Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, going on to establish her own studio as a professional ceramicist in 1982 with the help of a Crafts Council Setting-up grant.
Drawn to the meeting of the ancient and the modern, the rural and the urban, Gabriele creates simple forms, aiming to integrate balance and tension, stillness and tension, precision and spontaneity. Her interest in the elemental quality of ceramics led her to explore unglazed, burnished, smoke fired work, investigating the direct interaction between fire and earth.
Central to Gabriele’s work is the concept of the vessel, creating associations with sharing, ritual and celebration, reminders of our humanity, our history and connection with nature. Recent work has developed a more graphic language combining stoneware clay with porcelain.
