Iva takes inspiration from Constantin Brancusi’s notion of the essential in art and Paul Klee’s belief that the artist distils from nature. She likes working with unglazed porcelain because of the strength that its sensuous and fragile appearance belies, but she also works with a variety of clays, from the refined to the coarse. Pieces are dipped in white matt or shiny glazes. The use of white is integral to Iva’s practice as it reveals the clay, whilst simultaneously covering it, and emphasizes the form and texture of her pieces. Her gently textured surfaces are created using simple ceramic tools, such as a scraper and rasp blades which are left visible to attest to their maker’s hand. Iva’s prioritization of the creative process and rhythm of making results in pieces that are imbued with a sense of balance, clarity and stillness.

Dimensions: H 44cm x ⌀ 10cm

Materials: Porcelain

Method: Hand thrown and carved

Description

A poetic form finished with a characterful tone, Cook is continually influenced by the beautiful Suffolk landscape, through the kaleidoscope of colour surrounding her. She chooses the tone of the vessel is to align with its form, resulting in a completely unique piece. Created using a smooth stoneware clay, these pieces are hand-built by rolling out perfectly flat, thin slabs, which are then moulded into one of several forms. Once the pieces are formed, they are cut and reassembled into intriguing origami-esque sculptures. The process results in endlessly unique silhouettes with the perfect blend of soft, easy curves and crisp edges and folds.

The stoneware object boasts a rich dark ruby finish, quite a contrast to Ann’s usual approach to colour. The medium sized grey moon jar is finely crafted in a thin body of mid-toned grey clay and decorated in thick, heavy grey expressive slip, glazed in a layer of thick crackle glaze. Lindenberg was inspired to make something beautiful out of the colour grey, subverting and mediating expectations towards the colour which is often associated with gloom and sadness. Instead, the artist finds tranquillity in the quiet colour, reflected in the warm grey exuding a sense of comfort from the piece. The crystalline crackle glaze enhances the subtle tones of the clay and pools on the markings of the textured expressive slip, muting the rugged pattern as if it were icing over the surface of the jar. Meanwhile, the protrusions of the slip serves as a reminder of roughness of the material. The form of the moon jar reflects back on the poetic evocations of Lindenberg’s work, deeply entangled with nature and East Asian aesthetic philosophy.

The piece elegantly treads a balance between delicate softness and jagged roughness, reflecting the artist’s interest in natural geomorphic forms and influence from the Japanese aesthetic theory of wabi-sabi – an appreciation for beauty in imperfection.
