Description
This figure and plinth are a dark walnut brown, evoking an almost burnt quality. The figure lacks arms and legs, but manages to hold an almost impossible pose, leaning forward at a highly dramatic angle.
Hideo Sawada’s beautifully hand carved figures are a matchless example of a modern application of traditional techniques, balancing the abstract with gentle suggestions of emotion and human form.
About the Artist
Hideo Sawada is an established sculptor from Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture in Japan. He studied Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, Germany to train in Western Sculpture. Despite his training in Europe, Sawada’s evocative work reflects an adherence to Japanese traditional aesthetics rather than Western naturalism.
