Shun Kumagai Glass Vessel 8

Handmade in Japan

Dimensions: H 21cm x W 19cm

Materials: Glass, natural metal oxides

Method:  Shun Kumagai creates his beautifully anachronistic glass pieces by combining lost wax casting with a coil building technique, traditionally used in with clay. The glass is coloured with natural metal oxides like copper, iron, or cobalt, and traces of clay and earth.

Care: Can hold water. To clean, carefully wipe with a damp cloth

Here Kumagai experiments with the texture of glass, highlighted by the earthy character of the clay coating. With elegant shocks of blue, this subtle and dynamic vase finds beauty in imperfections and evokes the natural world, balancing an appreciation of ancient glass crafts and Japanese ceramics.

About the Artist:

Shun Kumagai (b. 1983, Akita, Japan) graduated from Akita Municipal Junior College of Arts and Crafts in 2007, before staying on as an assistant. He refined his distinct approach to his material through working as a glass artist at Toyama Glass Studio between 2012 and 2015, before moving to Akita Arya Glass Studio in 2017. Since 2020, Kumagai has run a private working glass studio in his hometown of Akita City, and has exhibited internationally in various cities such as London, Paris and Kyoto.
