This striking hand-thrown porcelain vessel has black porcelain slip brushstroke and no glaze, a relatively new technique for Tom Kemp. Tom Kemp is a ceramicist who creates large porcelain vessels which express his interest and passion for calligraphy and Roman sign writing through mark-making. Tom creates exquisite minimal forms on the wheel which are then brought to life what is usually just a single brush stroke with a square shaped brush. The vessels are the surfaces for his brushstrokes which reveal a huge amount of information of the way he moves during the extremely quick painting process.

Tom has experimented with many different tools for mark making, working to exclude any recognisable language and focus on movements, graphical and bodily relationship, universal aspects of writing that are unspecific to any group. With refined forms and distinctive markings, Tom’s work has fast become noted among both ceramicists and collectors worldwide.
