Special Collection: Sarah Woods and Carina Ciscato

Maud & Mabel are delighted to present a new special collection, combining sublime works by artists Carina Ciscato and Sarah Woods. Exhibiting a shared material meditation on soft wintery tones and poetic lines, Ciscato’s porcelain vessels, platters and ingots alongside Woods’ graphic painted horizons pair together impactfully - offering the viewer two material practises which contemplate spatial perception in new, challenging ways.

Carina Ciscato’s carefully conceived ceramics explore form and structure deftly; pushing the limits of her material through her applied examinations into porcelain’s duality of strength and fragility. First throwing on the wheel then later tearing, cutting, folding and stretching, the pieces are assembled in a spontaneous and fluid manner which is exposed and revealed through their layered construction and presentation of subtle marks and indentations. Providing critical insight into our perception of an object, Ciscato discovers a hidden beauty beyond function and  predictability, in search of a purer aesthetic that always allows for new meanings, observations and ways of seeing and perceiving - rendering the object redefined and reinvented.

Working from her studio in Newlyn, Cornwall, Sarah Woods’ meditative paintings, with their quiet tones and gentle gestures, follow a rhythm that allows for deep connection to land and sea. Each collection changes with the seasons, as Woods notices the warmer hues of sea, softness of cliffs and colours that inspire her to make something in the landscape she resides in. Defined by their purity of form and colour - delicate shades of umber for land, Naples yellow for earthy sand, and hues of Prussian blue for sea and sky - each is born from a slow, tranquil flow state - one that the artist describes as ‘intuitive and gentle’. Paintings and prints are formed from smaller drawings with tone and composition in mind.Following the forms of her landscape, the artist moves her brush simply with soft colours, and the purest, most refined elements of paint and canvas come together to capture moments of an eternally changing coastline.
