TAKEHITO ICHIKAWA

TAKEHITO ICHIKAWA

Born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, Takehito Ichikawa is a woodwork artist based in Nagoya. Beginning in furniture making and Buddhist altar restoration, Ichikawa developed a disciplined respect for material and craft. His move to the woodworking lathe opened a more exploratory body of work shaped by curiosity and attentiveness to form.

Ichikawa is known for vessels and vases that celebrate the natural character of wood: grain, tonal variation, and gradual transformation over time. He works with a wide range of species, often selecting spalted or richly figured woods, allowing the grain to guide the form and atmosphere of each piece. Intricately carved stands and bases accompany many works; some are simple, others decorative, and all are conceived as functional objects that can be used upright or inverted. Displayed together, these stands resemble a family; individual yet harmoniously related.
