Description

Ann’s works are perfectly balanced, with enticingly smooth surfaces and a satisfying weight. Created using a smooth stoneware clay, these pieces are hand-built by rolling out perfectly flat, thin slabs, which are then moulded into one of several forms. Once formed, the pieces are cut and reassembled into intriguing origami-esque sculptures. This process results in endlessly unique silhouettes with the perfect blend of soft, easy curves and crisp edges and folds.

The vessels utilise monochromatic colour patterns, with terracotta-shade interiors often contrasting teal, orange, and brown exteriors. Her pieces are heavily inspired by the Japanese art of origami, an influence that is evident in their carefully considered forms and angled folds. Regularly switching between using seams and overlapping slabs in the structures of her work, Ann creates technically impeccable vessels that reveal her creativity and precision as a ceramicist. While celebrating well-executed design, her final pieces still feel effortlessly poetic.

About the Artist

Ann Van Hoey is a Belgian ceramic artist with a unique ceramic practice foregrounded by mathematical and scientific precision. She obtained her degree in Ceramics from the Institute for Arts and Craft in Mechelen in 2006, and previously received her Masters in Applied Economic Sciences at the University of Antwerp in 1979. Influenced by this background, each piece by Ann begins as a mathematical equation, ensuring that technical impeccability is maintained throughout her process.
