Description

Asaho Kamiya’s ceramic collection features poetic forms with richly worked surfaces, where bare clay and layered glazes create depth and quiet contrast and areas of a stonelike matt finish meet intricate glossy glazes, providing additional depth and tactile surface variation. The palette ranges from vibrant colour to soft, ethereal tones, accented with subtle touches of gold.  Intricate illustrations and gestural patterns referencing plants and natural forms are delicately drawn into the surface, sometimes clearly defined, sometimes dissolving into abstraction. Across the collection, form, image, and surface are closely integrated, creating vessels that reveal their details slowly over time.

About the Artist

Based in Toyama, Japanese artist Asaho Kamiya allows time, touch and memory to guide her hands. Kamiya is known for her intricately detailed tea bowls, sake cups, and vessels. Natural clay tones form the foundation of her work, imbuing warmth of earth and fire.

Her colour palette is inspired by nature and memory, while the texture and character of the clay shapes the final form of each work. For Kamiya, her practice focuses on a union between form and image, bringing a modern sensitivity to traditional craft.
