Description

Crafted from a warmer stoneware clay body that Emelie Abrahamsson has recently begun exploring, this vessel possesses a gentle warmth while remaining grounded in the quiet restraint that defines her work. Pigments gathered from her island home of Hönö are incorporated directly into the clay, giving the piece a tangible connection to the landscape and embedding place within its materiality.

The form rises from a delicate foot, expanding softly into a rounded body before folding back in on itself towards a restrained opening. A subtle indentation punctuates the vessel’s otherwise harmonious silhouette, introducing a quiet sense of movement a gentle wave that shifts the piece from simple symmetry to something more organic and alive.

Working with locally sourced pigments and the ancient technique of egg tempera, Abrahamsson achieves nuanced tonal variations that preserve the natural character and texture of the clay. The surface reveals a remarkable softness and depth, with tones that subtly change as they catch the light. Both sculptural and deeply tactile, the vessel embodies a thoughtful balance between material, landscape, and form, inviting close observation and contemplation.

About the Artist

Emelie Abrahamsson is an emerging ceramic artist based in Hönö, an island in the Swedish archipelago. Since 2018, she has been working with ceramics, opening her own working studio in 2021 in her grandfather's old boathouse. Today, she runs her own company called mliceceramics, with a strong focus on raw clay traditionally formed into soft, organic shapes - modern ceramic pieces combining art, design and functionality.

“I work with clay. That’s what I do. Building up and sculpting stoneware clay bit by bit.  As I use the coiling technique to sculpt my ceramic pieces, the main tool is my hands. I want to simultaneously create a timeless, unique and modern product. I love to work with natural textures and large shapes, but what inspires me the most must be the history and soul of the ceramic tradition.  I am thankful to be a part of the ceramic tradition.” - Emelie Abrahamsson
