Description
Hajeong’s works are identified by their experimental nature, both rustic and dynamic. Her use of inlay, white slip and iron brushwork creates a deeply thoughtful sense of depth and solidity in her pieces, whilst rooting her work in traditional Korean Buncheong technique.
Her vessels possess an intriguing complexity in form, developed through her use of floral and fluid markings upon rigid, structural surfaces. Many of the interiors and bases of her works reveal the raw, high-iron clay body beneath, with its deep mulberry colouring complementing her adept use of grey and white glazes and slips. The pieces are finalised when they are fired in a gas kiln under strong reduction conditions, bringing Hajeong’s hand carvings to life.
The physical weight, cultural influence, and depth of design in Hajeong’s Buncheong ware asserts her skill as a ceramicist and effortlessly reflects her deep appreciation for refined craftsmanship and the beauty of timeless ceramics.
About the Artist
Hajeong Lee Rogers spent much of her childhood and early years in Seoul, studying crafts at Sungshin Women’s University in 1995. During this time, she harnessed her skill in ceramics and graduated with a BA in 2001, and an MA in 2003. She returned to this same university as a teaching assistant and subsequently became a lecturer. Whilst teaching, Hajeong focused on creating large ceramic works, and soon received the National Award for Craft Art in 2005. She relocated to the UK in 2011, setting up her own studio alongside her husband’s workshop in rural Wales, where she still works today. In 2021, Hajeong was elected as a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association.
