Description
Kouzo Takeuchi creates sculptural vessels characterised by bold geometric forms and a distinctly architectural sensibility. Constructed from cubes, blocks and sharply defined planes, the pieces range from pared-back compositions to more intricate arrangements of interlocking volumes.
Their deep charcoal and cement-grey surfaces lend a quiet Brutalist quality, softened by subtle tonal variation and texture that recalls weathered concrete. Small angular openings punctuate the solid forms, drawing light into the work and transforming sculptural objects into delicately functional vessels.
There is a satisfying sense of weight and permanence to each piece, yet Takeuchi’s inventive compositions introduce an unexpected playfulness. Balancing strength with subtlety, his vessels possess a commanding presence while remaining warm, engaging and full of character.
About the Artist
Born in Hyogo, Japan, Kouzo Takeuchi graduated from Osaka University of Arts in 2001 and completed further studies at the Tajimi Municipal Ceramic Design Institute, Gifu, in 2003.
Guided by a fascination with geometric form and inspired by the ancient ruins of South America, Takeuchi creates sculptural ceramic works that evoke the passage of time. Architectural in structure and reminiscent of weathered stone, his pieces explore the tension between endurance and decay, solidity and fragility. Through carefully composed forms and nuanced surfaces, he transforms these themes into objects of quiet strength and enduring beauty.
Takeuchi’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, reflecting his established place within contemporary ceramics.
