Description
The Domotos’ Yakishime series features carved illustrations, often presented without clay inlay. Yakishime is a traditional Japanese pottery technique in which unglazed stoneware is fired at high temperatures, allowing the clay to vitrify and become naturally waterproof without the use of glaze.
In this series, surface colour and texture are shaped by the clay, the flame, and the ash deposits within the kiln. The result is a rustic yet refined aesthetic, with each piece bearing unique variations in tone and surface; a direct record of the firing process. As with all of their work, these vessels are thoughtfully crafted as functional tableware, tea utensils, and sake cups.
About the Artist
Kumiko and Michihiro Domoto are based in the historic pottery region of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. They combine local Echizen clays with raw clay they forage within the prefecture, creating ceramics shaped by the materials of their immediate surroundings.
Michihiro specialises in wheel-throwing and wood-firing, while Kumiko applies meticulous Mishima (zōgan) inlay, a technique originating in Korea in which finely carved lines are filled with white clay to form intricate surface patterns.
Together, they create functional works including tableware, tea utensils and sake cups, defined by their material integrity and refined craftsmanship.
