Description

Louis elegantly creates vessels that are representative and innately respectful of the natural world. Creating works that are materially connected to the landscapes from which they emerge is central to his practice. He creates richly tactile surfaces through a repeated application and removal of lacquer and clay, allowing patterns and textures to develop organically.

Final surfaces evoke the vision of weathered stone and oxidation, and invite viewers to consider the gradual transformation of natural landscapes. Having the piece in one’s own home extends this concept further, as the owner’s interaction with the object may result in the development of a patina, marking a natural transition shaped by its environment.

Louis says: “The image is not imposed upon the surface, but emerges through the materiality of accumulation, erosion and chance, echoing the ways in which nature continually shapes its surfaces over time.”
