Description

Crafted by artistic duo Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling, these wooden sculptures are formed from English hardwood, celebrating the natural character and integrity of the material. Each piece is carefully shaped to create a soft silhouette that appears rounded from the front and flattened in profile, offering a quiet interplay between volume and plane.

Their work carries a cultural and poetic sensibility, expressed through asymmetrical discs and bottle like forms. Surfaces are worked by hand, with facets, engraved lines, and subtle markings that give every piece a distinct texture and presence.

Individually, each sculpture has a strong, sculptural clarity, when grouped, they form nuanced arrangements with gentle contrasts in shape, tone, and surface.

About the Artist

Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling make sculptures in wood, from half-ton monumental forms for a secret garden, to vessels sewn together from sections of veneer weighing a few grammes. They have worked together on every stage of the piece, collaborating full time since 1997.

"What all our pieces share is the central role of the hand and of hand tools, primarily through carving."

Working on different bodies of work concurrently, continuing their series of still life groupings both in monochrome and colour at the same time as making significant single pieces.
They have been living and working together in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in England's Cotswold hills since 1997.
