Description
Simone’s mixed-media works are a captivating expression of inner and outer worlds, creating entirely unique landscapes that communicate an essence of otherworldliness. The clay’s finish gives the pieces a richly tactile surface, with indentations that are both a result of the material and Simone’s own markings. Some portray that of weathered concrete, while some have repetitive rectangular patterns, imposing window-like structures onto the irregular forms of her work.
Sculptural works appear sporadically throughout this collection, bringing the quaint nature of Simone's work to light. The monumental, attention-demanding structures are offset with irregular angles, which are crucial in softening their forms and nature. With the maker's hand visible in the physical building of these works, their initially brutalist appearance becomes one of familiarity and tenderness.
Special trinkets found by Simone weave their way into the majority of her works, often incorporated as functional handles and lids. The deep iron and auburn tones of these rusted metal and fabric pieces soften the ruggedness of the finished clay, resulting in works that feel decadent and invaluable; they are pieces to treasure and continually connect with.
