CHENG WEI
Cheng Wei (b.1987) originates from Luzhou in the Sichuan province of China. In 2010, Wei graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and established his working studio. 2014 saw Wei set up his Songfeng House - his personal brand. Cheng Wei is a leader amongst the new generation of modern ceramic artists based in Jingdezhen, having studied pottery and the art of tea, cha dao, for over 15 years. He and his wife work alongside one another in their studio, where they now train younger aspiring ceramicists.
Through an eclectic range of forms and finishes, Cheng Wei’s harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary, organic and refined, ancient and contemporary, create an exciting and endlessly unique collection of forms. Specialising in hand-made teapots, gong dao bei and tea bowls, Cheng Wei favours clay with a high iron content. His innovations in new glazes and textures allow him to exhibit subtle, muted colours on traditional forms of teaware. He relishes in the relationship his pieces have to the passing of time, presenting a sense of the antique with regular use.
