KENJI OMORI

KENJI OMORI

Kenji Omori is a ceramic artist based in Okayama Prefecture whose work brings together sculptural form, architectural sensitivity and the tactile qualities of clay. Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1982, he studied Environmental Design at Tokyo Zokei University before completing the programme at the Tajimi City Ceramic Design Institute in 2007.

Omori’s background in design and architecture continues to shape his approach to ceramics. His vessels and vases possess a strong structural presence, balancing carefully considered proportions with surfaces that feel weathered, raw and deeply material. Working primarily with red and black clay, he creates pieces that often contrast rough exteriors against softer glazed interiors, sometimes finished with subtle silver detailing. The surfaces can resemble concrete or stone, yet retain the warmth and irregularity of hand-worked clay.

Before turning his focus towards functional ceramics, Omori produced large-scale sculptural works, and traces of this sculptural thinking remain central to his practice today. His forms feel grounded and architectural without becoming rigid, carrying a sense of weight, texture and spatial awareness. He is particularly interested in how ceramics change through use, allowing stains, marks and patina to gradually alter the surface over time and become part of the work itself.

Now working from his studio in Okayama, Omori continues to create ceramics that bridge contemporary form with the enduring character of traditional materials.
