Description:
The beautiful cup, the artist’s personal favourite piece from her Quiet Thoughts collection, is finely handcrafted by artist Annette Lindenberg using kurinuki, the traditional Japanese technique of carving from a single block of clay. The cup is made with hand mixed pale grey clay glazed in a gentle crackling garden glaze. The simplicity is matched by the quiet subtle blue tint of the grey glaze with lilac hue when viewed under certain lights. Understated small crackles in the glaze catches the tints of colours and adds complexity to the piece. The cool tones are set off by the warmth of the thinly applied milky glaze which makes the piece smooth to touch, complemented by the curvature of the form which sits comfortably in a palm.
Jagged cuts are smoothed over by the subtle glaze, and the small cuts and facets cohesively merge on one surface, elegantly treading a balance between delicate softness and roughness, reflecting the artist’s interest in natural geomorphic forms and influence from the Japanese aesthetic theory of wabi-sabi – an appreciation for beauty in imperfection. This combination results in a mesmerising rawness and warmth that is simultaneously intimate and subliminal. The unglazed bottom exhibits the original rough clay body, finished with the neat maker’s mark.
