Description

McLeish’s collection of stoneware vessels is hand-built using pinching and coiling, allowing each form to develop slowly and intuitively. Forms are layered with slips, washes, and glazes, some made from materials collected during her walks, creating a variety of surfaces from smooth, pebble-like whites to intricate crackles and deeply textured blacks. The forms range from elegant columnar vases to shorter, amphora-like silhouettes, featuring gentle asymmetries, decorative lugs and subtle shifts in proportion. These quiet irregularities give each piece warmth, movement, and a distinctly handmade presence.

About the Artist

East London based ceramicist Charlotte McLeish worked in her family’s jewellery business as a goldsmith before studying ceramics at Brighton.

Her interest in antiques and historical objects was sparked whilst working at a National Trust House. She takes her inspiration from the Ancient Greek and Egyptian ceramics on display in the V&A and British Museum, which she visits regularly to sketch and take notes to later refer to whilst working.
