Description
Glenn Dane’s work is guided by an experimental, material-led approach that embraces the natural character and imperfections of wood. Rather than concealing knots, cracks, grain variation, and repairs, he incorporates them into the finished piece, often using stitching and other interventions that highlight the material’s history and individuality.
His collection includes angular tea bowls, sculptural wall plates, and open vessels, where faceted, architectural forms create a strong sculptural presence on an intimate, hand-held scale. Natural matte surfaces shift between smooth carving and irregular faceting, enhancing each silhouette through contrasts of light, texture, and form. Deep blacks, earthy browns, reds, chalky creams, and whites appear as subtle gradients or bold blocks of colour, while dyes and layered finishes create everything from velvety, light-absorbing surfaces to richly crackled textures.
The result is a distinctive body of work that balances sculpture and function, celebrating both the beauty of the material and the possibilities of experimentation.
About the Artist
Glenn Dane works in Cambridgeshire, creating vessels and sculptural forms from locally and sustainably sourced wood. Using freshly cut green timber, he allows natural movement and distortion to shape each piece, preserving knots, fissures and grain as traces of growth. Cracks are stitched as acts of care, and surfaces are finished with hand-made dyes and pigments from foraged plants, seeds and earth. The works exist as abstract, three-dimensional landscapes that reimagine the countryside through form and colour.
