Description

The traditional moon jar 달항아리 (dalhang-ali) is recognised for its elegant form and colour echoing that of the moon, often appearing as if levitating with their seemingly illogically weighted structure and base and rim measuring equal in height. Doherty reinterprets the iconic form in his Keeper vessels. Romantic in their conceptualisation, with their tiny ‘almost totally impractical’ lids, the Keepers are for him transporters and retainers of secrets and messages - “it’s an idea, a thought, a concept - it's something we want to keep secure, putting something away and sealing it safe”.

About the Artist

Jack Doherty is a ceramic artist based in Cornwall. Using one clay body, one colouring mineral and one single firing technique, Doherty’s singleness of process and practice of utmost refinement has granted him a way of making that allows him to speak of the stories that are important to him. Doherty’s fascination with prehistoric ceramics is revealed through the form of the vessels themselves, whose archetypal shapes have their roots in a universal history.
