Description
Jayne Armstrong explores the sculptural and aesthetic possibilities of traditional woodwork, experimenting with the ways the material moves and changes shape as it dries. Through this approach, the resulting works are remarkably unique in their colouring, form, and irregular markings, both intentional and accidental.
Each piece begins life on a woodturning lathe where it is often turned to no more than one or two millimetres before being left to dry naturally. Once dry, Jayne carves, bleaches, stains, burns, embellishes, paints, oils and waxes. Jayne describes this process as a dialogue between material, concept, technology and technique.
The works possess an exceptional weightlessness; incredibly thin to the touch and balanced upon a singular point. Practising in Eucalyptus, Oak, and Sycamore for this collection, Jayne’s pieces carry a sense of story in their natural surfaces and her hand staining, marking, and painting. Each piece is intentionally unique and the outcome of multiple processes.

Jayne Armstrong works primarily in fresh, green wood to explore the sculptural and aesthetic possibilities of a material that moves and changes shape as it dries. Jayne’s academic background within cultural studies informs and underpins her approach to woodwork. Experimental and exploratory, her work draws from art history, design history and philosophy. She describes her work as a dialogue between material, concept, technology and technique.
