Description
An exploration into glass's ability to simultaneously conceal and reveal, this kiln-formed spherical glass vessel with a rounded lid has been handworked and polished to recall the 'ocular'. With a silky and matte finish, this translucent and dynamic vessel subtly hints at what is kept inside, heightening the act of looking. This 'Lens Container' possesses a frosted exterior contrasted with glossy interiors resulting in a sophisticated luminosity. Small enough to fit in one's hands, the concave lensing in the peephole creates an illusion of distance, making everything miniature. This lensing creates an otherworldly dimension, a tiny precious space where something of emotional value can be kept.
About the Artist
Lola Lazaro Hinks (b.1990 in London) is a London-based artist and designer. She makes sculptural work in glass; trained as a photographer, the use of optics runs as a seed throughout the work. Characterised by layered, constructed and multi-element forms that draw from the photographic; using lensing, the space between focal lengths, apertures, polished and transparent glass, dark spaces and opacity to entangle vision with concealment. She is deeply interested in the material qualities of glass, of transparency and opacity, to explore themes of visibility, power and attention.
She received her Masters in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2018 and her Bachelors in Fine Art Photography from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2012.
