Description

Takahashi McGil’s collection of sculptural vessels, containers, and spoons is crafted from locally sourced hardwoods including sycamore, cherry, ash, and beech. Drawing on both Japanese and Western traditions, the works feature carefully considered forms and distinctive surface finishes, with traditional materials such as tonoko, urushi, and jinoko used throughout. Fine rows of vertical notches introduce rhythm and tactility, while natural characteristics of the wood, knots, grain variation, and subtle cracks, are intentionally preserved, making each piece quietly individual.

About the Artist 

Takahashi McGil are an artistic duo comprised of husband and wife, Mark McGilvray and Kaori Takahashi, who met at Wimbledon School of Art where they both studied Fine Art. Mark is from South Africa and Kaori is from Japan and the pair now live and work in Devon, where they are part of the Make Southwest. The pair combine Japanese and Western techniques, traditions and tools in their designs. Originally, their pieces were intended solely for personal use, but their company was happily formed in 2016.
