One of our foremost potters in the UK Akiko Hirai graduated in ceramics at the University of Westminster and subsequently Central St. Martins. Akiko works from her London based studio as well as lecturing in ceramics. Usually choosing to work in other clays for their impurities, Akiko is most interested in porcelains durability in comparison to other materials. Finding the unforgiving nature of porcelain challenging, she approaches the work with the intention of expressing the condition of the process; “something ambiguous, unsettled and imaginative” so that the users sees the journey the object has taken, from raw clay to firing.
