SIMONE KRUG-SPRINGSGUTH
Simone Krug-Springsguth was born in 1967 in the former East German city, then named Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Chemnitz. She originally pursued a career as an illustrator before discovering the endless possibilities of ceramics in 1995. This new direction was initially entirely self taught, until soon apprenticing to noted ceramic artists, including Peter Tauscher and Markus Klausmann.
Building on the experience she had gained, she studied at the Academy for Design in Craftsmanship in Chemnitz from 2007 to 2011. Since then, she has established her own studio and won several design awards, exhibiting her work at international events in England, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, and Austria. She also recently spent time as an artist-in-residence in Jingdezhen, China’s oldest ‘porcelain city’.
Her mixed-media works are a captivating expression of inner and outer worlds, creating entirely unique landscapes that communicate an essence of otherworldliness. She says: “The interpretations go in different directions because it's exciting to change the perspective. But at a certain point of penetration, the essence of exploration comes together. Vessels whose depth can also be an emotional space, a stop for things or thoughts. The starting point for the respective objects are usually artifacts or special old finds. They give the object a certain history and are, so to speak, the doors to other spaces/worlds and times. Each object is therefore full of originality and mystery.”
