Description
Simone’s mixed-media works are a captivating expression of inner and outer worlds, creating entirely unique landscapes that communicate an essence of otherworldliness. The clay’s finish gives the pieces a richly tactile surface, with indentations that are both a result of the material and Simone’s own markings. Some portray that of weathered concrete, while some have repetitive rectangular patterns, imposing window-like structures onto the irregular forms of her work.
Lidded jars repeat themselves most throughout the collection, with meticulously measured openings that invite user and viewer interaction. The interiors of her pieces come to life with their sporadic and unpredictable glazing, often bringing coarse white and blue textures to the surface in ring formations. These striking tones offset the warm greys throughout the core material, introducing a complexity and softness to the structures.
Special trinkets found by Simone weave their way into the majority of her works, often incorporated as functional handles and lids. The deep iron and auburn tones of these rusted metal and fabric pieces soften the ruggedness of the finished clay, resulting in works that feel decadent and invaluable; they are pieces to treasure and continually connect with.
