We are pleased to announce forthcoming exhibition 'Chōwa: The Search for Balance', honouring a diverse group of contemporary Japanese artists working across glass, ceramics, wood, metal, and more. Whether rooted in tradition or the experimental, each work speaks to a living, evolving dialogue between material, process and artist.
Bringing together the works of artist both familiar and new to Maud & Mabel, the exhibition will present collections by:
Hiroshi Toyofuko
Airi Kagamihara
Akiko Yanagawa
Kenji Omori
Ryo Watanabe
Masaaki Iwasa
and Liisa Hashimoto

In contemporary craft Chōwa signifies a meeting of craftmanship and design, the natural and the manmade, tradition and modernity. In the works presented in this exhibition, balance emerges between fragility and resilience, refinement and rawness, intention and chance. The curve of a vessel, the patina of hammered metal, the grain revealed in carved wood, each is a conversation between the maker’s hand and the natural world.
This balance is not ornamental, it is an ethos. It reflects an understanding that beauty resides in proportion, restraint, and the subtle embrace of imperfection. Through this sensibility, the artists offer more than finely crafted artworks. They invite us into moments of stillness and connection, an attentiveness to form, texture, and presence, that lingers quietly in the mind long after the encounter.
