SAEAM KWON
Saeam Kwon is a Korean ceramicist based in Berlin, practicing in clay since 2009. Focused on creating fine stoneware, their work combines minimalist forms with traditional sensibilities, using dark, textured, clay contrasted by delicate details and lightness. After moving to Berlin in 2017, they work as a full-time ceramicist, and part-time Potter’s wheel instructor, creating all their pieces in a little studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain. A significant part of their practice explores objects for the Gongfu tea ceremony, reflecting a deep respect for process, material, and restraint.
Each work possesses a delicate form, with dainty sculpting and meticulous shaping. The use of dark clays juxtapose the lightness of the pieces, and play with motions of shadow and light. The deep charcoal clay is complimented by lighter highlights, while softer stone-like pieces gain depth through shading details on the clay’s edge. They pay significant attention to proportion and weightlessness, with each piece harnessing a true sense of craftsmanship and skill, transforming otherwise simple tableware. Saeam also occasionally works in lighter clays, using translucent ochre glazes to enhance the ceramics’ form and depth. Through thoughtful pieces, Saeam seeks to bring the act of tea drinking closer to everyday life.
