Description
Ryo Watanabe's sculptural objects balance bold, poetic forms with intricate surface detail. Their silhouettes range from flattened pebble-like shapes to softly faceted wedge forms, each carefully composed to rest on different planes, creating a sense of movement and equilibrium.
Crafted in iron, brass and aluminium, the subtly brushed surfaces catch the light with a gentle lustre. Smooth planes are interrupted by stone-like textures, rich patinas, and quiet imperfections that reveal the hand of the maker.
Deeply tactile, these pieces invite interaction. The seamless, cool metal forms conceal hidden elements within their voids, shifting sand, weighted interiors, and gently rattling components that reveal themselves as the work is lifted, turned or rocked. Watanabe's sculptures offer moments of surprise, play, and contemplation with every encounter.
About the Artist
Ryo Watanabe graduated from Musashino Art University in 2001, where he studied Spatial and Environmental Design. His practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for natural forms and materials, shaped in part by his early experience with traditional metalworking techniques.
Working primarily with brass, iron, and aluminium, Watanabe creates one of kind functional objects that blur the boundary between sculpture and every day. Inspired by stones, seeds, fallen leaves, twigs, and pebbles encountered in daily life, his works are characterized by gentle curves, organic silhouettes, and a quiet sense of balance. Through vessels, trays, plates, and other forms, he transforms familiar materials into contemplative objects that invite touch and close observation.
Watanabe has described the textured surfaces of his pieces as an attempt to imagine peeling away the skin of a stone and reshaping it into a vessel small enough to carry in one’s pocket. Combining utility with understated artistry, his work encourages an appreciation of simple, everyday moments and is widely admired for its refined craftsmanship and thoughtful presence.
